Description

Henry Hazlitt wrote this book following his stint at the New York Times as an editorialist. His hope was to reduce the whole teaching of economics to a few principles and explain them in ways that people would never forget. It worked. He relied on some stories by Bastiat and his own impeccable capacity for logical thinking and crystal-clear prose.

He was writing under the influence of Mises himself, of course, but he brought his own special gifts to the project. As just one example, this is the book that made the idea of the "broken window fallacy" so famous. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy.

This is the book to send to reporters, politicians, pastors, political activists, teachers, or anyone else who needs to know. It is probably the most important economics book ever written in the sense that it offers the greatest hope to educating everyone about the meaning of the science.

Many writers have attempted to beat this book as an introduction, but have never succeeded. Hazlitt's book remains the best. It's still the quickest way to learn how to think like an economist. And this is why it has been used in the best classrooms for more than sixty years.

I was asked this year by a friend I hadn't seen in months what economics would I recommend over all others. I read around 75 books per year, and he knows I read quite a bit about the economy. I didn't have to think, I replied quickly "Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt". "Already read it" he replied. "In that case, Human Action, by Ludwig von Mises".

Here I am looking at this book wanting to buy a dozen copies so I can give them out as Christmas gifts when I saw the reviews and just laughed. Everyone should read this book, Marxism was defeated intellectually long ago, and hundreds of millions dead cry from the dust so that we do not have to experience the same demise. Fortunately, this book doesn't go into great detail about all that, but rather is simple economic lessons that are approachable for anyone from any background. It is light, in every sense of the word and I am so grateful that it is still being published.

One of the two best books for discussions
I originally ordered two. One for my kids and one to give to a friend. I actually ended up giving them both to friends. Former Neo Cons that are now very open to Liberty and are having open conversations about it. Though this book may not have been meant to convert, it is a powerful tool. I have several more people in mind as I am trying to open minds and let others know what economics really are.

Besides "Anatomy of the State" this has been my most powerful tool in discussing sound economics and why it goes hand in hand with Liberty.
